Morning adaptogenic chocolate tonic
Updated: Sep 10, 2019
Ditching coffee or looking for alternative ways to boost your energy in the morning? Try out this delicious mushroom chocolate tonic and find a sustained energy source.
The word 'adaptogen' may be new to you, but medicinal mushrooms and herbs are as old as the Earth itself. Adaptogen is a term used for plants and foods that help us adapt to the stressor in life better and help balance our adrenals. These magic foods are neither a stimulant or a sedative, but rather a supportive regulator that helps find an optimum balance. Hence adaptogens are safe to use long term and are non- addictive (opposite to coffee).

For this recipe I love to use reishi mushroom powder, which is also known for it's immunomodulating properties. Reishi has slightly savoury taste, which works really well with the bitterness of cocoa. Although cocoa is known for it's stimulating properties, it is also packed with magnesium, iron and antioxidants that can act as powerful mood enhancers.
Large mug for one
1 tbsp cocoa powder
1/2 tspn reishi powder
1/4 tspn matcha tea powder
1/4 tspn nutmeg
1/2 tspn cardamom
1/2 tspn cinnamon
1/4 tspn ashwaganda powder (or as directed for one serving)*
1/4 tspn rhodiola powder (or as directed for one serving)*
1 tspn ghee or coconut oil
1 cup cashew, almond or coconut alternative milk
1/4 cup boiling water
1 tspn raw honey or maple syrup
1. Add all the dry ingredients and powders together in a blender, add ghee or coconut oil (for a vegan version) and blend.
2. Separately warm cashew, almond or coconut alternative milk and add to the blender. Blend until all mixes. Add maple syrup.
3. If adding honey for sweetness, make sure you cool the tonic down slightly before.
Enjoy!
* These are optional, however it may contribute towards more balanced energy and emotion levels.
Use powder or extract and follow the instructions on the label for adding 1/2 or full portion.
